Bing
Okay, Bing gets a lot of flack for «also working» alongside Google, but it has some great features. Many of the Google carriers work here, but I really only understand that Bing has IP: for finding other websites on the same IP (fun cross-referencing on a shared host).

Network, Domain and Routing Information

Most of this page is about finding information about people from social media rather than online. However, sometimes knowing who owns a network/domain/IP address is a great place to start, so people leave things in their Whois records that can reveal a lot of useful leads. There are a lot of sites that offer these services, but I’ll just highlight my favorites.

RobTex

While the interface is a bit odd in my opinion, this is a great site for performing reverse DNS lookups on IP addresses, grabbing Whois contacts, and finding other general information about an IP or domain name.

ServerSniff

This one is kind of a weird ball. Lots of sites offer Whois information, this one is dedicated to more exotic tools. You really just have to play around with it to find all of its features. It can be hard to remember which option is which sometimes. Just a few of the tools include: ICMP and TCP traces, SSL information, DNS reports, and hostnames on shared IPs. If you don’t want to use a proxy and don’t want your IP address showing up in the target’s logs, it would be nice if they did some reconnaissance.

Advanced Background Check

For finding addresses and relatives this is the bomb. So far it hasn’t let me down in finding mailing addresses if I have a vague idea where someone lives.

Peeking at You

The interface is clean, and while it does link to paid sites it at least gives you real information first. I seem to recall it being better before.

Lullar

Find a person using email | name | username. Doesn’t return as many results as other sites, but what it does give is nicely clean, without any of the hassle of all the paid sites.

Check Usernames

Okay, I have to say I like this site. It may not have been intended as a profiling site, but it does a good job of that. We all talk about password reuse being a problem, but for profiling someone, reusing a username is where it’s at. This site lets you search 160 social media sites to see if a nickname is already in use. From there, you can manually see what’s on the people’s profile on those sites. Saves time verses checking for an account on each site yourself, but you still have a lot of work to do after that.

Similar to the username checker above, but claims to check over 500 sites to see if a given username is taken.

i’m looking for

It used to be Spock («Single point of contact (for) a keyword»). Not sure when this changed, I’m guessing it was after Intelius bought them. You can search by Name | Phone | Email | Screen Name. Not bad for finding relatives, I guess. Once you find a name by username, you should step back and search for it too, as the results vary wildly. It seems to mostly encourage people to pay Intelius money.

People

You can search by name | email | username | phone and find similar results. The results can be very noisy, with links to a bunch of paid sites (Spokeo, Intellus, etc), but if you’re willing to sort through the bullshit, it’s pretty nice. I like what it shows from public records, Amazon profiles, and social media.

Like all of the above. Links to a bunch of other resources, some paid, some not.

Spokeo

Okay, Spokeo has some nice layout features, but it’s an information tease. It often says «hey, I found something» but you have to pay for the results. Like crime, I don’t pay. However, it can be a good starting point that will take you elsewhere. For example, if you know someone has a Facebook profile, you can just go to Facebook.

WebMii

Lets you search for people by name or keyword (try username as a keyword).

Zoom Info

Seems to be a good way to find where someone works. I wonder how much of the information is from LinkedIn alone and how much is from other sources? When you look at them side by side, Zoom Info seems to supplement the details with other sources.

Geolocation

Android Map

If you have your router’s MAC address (it happens), Samy has a tool that tries to determine its location based on what Google knows. It looks like Google is using Android phones for distributed wardrive to supplement its Street View car data.

Bing Map Apps

The map apps are a nice addition, but you’ll need SilverLight, and they don’t seem to be stable unless you’re using Internet Explorer (see picture). Take a look at the Twitter map app.

It’s also nice to see where people are tweeting from, but it’s not as pretty or complete as the Bing app.

I’ve had good luck using this to find addresses and neighbors.

Google Images

I’m guessing most people know about Google Images, but did you know anyone who can upload images (or drag and drop them) to get similar results? Good for searching profiles under different names. Tin Eye is similar, but doesn’t seem to have as many.

Tin Eye

Have you ever found a photo of someone and wondered if it existed anywhere else? Tin Eye is a browser plugin that lets you pick a picture and find similar ones online, even ones that have been seriously sold. Unfortunately, the database seems small. I’m hoping to be able to go to a social media profile, right-click on a picture whose username I only know, and then find other profiles with the real name and more details. So far, it’s been mostly useful for figuring out «who is this actor/model,» but maybe it will be better in the future.

Open Book

Gotta love people who leave Facebook comments open to the world. Even if one person is privacy-aware, their friend may not be and can’t comment on it.

Open Status Search

Open Book doesn’t seem to exist anymore, and Open Status Search seems like the next best thing.

Maltego
Great tool, I like how it draws relationships between entities like name, domain, email addresses, etc., which is good for building a mind map of how everything is connected. I still prefer doing things manually to eliminate false positives and interpret the data. You’ll probably have to sign up for API keys to get the most out of it.

NetGlub

This might be an open source replacement for Maltego someday, but right now it seems nearly impossible to get started.

Foca

I’m really digging these tools. It can search for common document formats using Google and other search engines, then download them to extract metadata. Beautiful.
